ETCHINGS and MONTAGE

I worked as an Intaglio Printmaker from 1977 -1997. My Etchings were made on zinc plates. The images were printed by hand rubbing the inks into grooves etched into the metal and running wet paper over them through a press. Each image took about three to six weeks and printing each image took from one to three hours. Etchings are considered to be originals even though created in editions.

At first I did a lot of art work depicting Michigan wild animals in a natural setting.

In the mid 1970s when I began working in the darkroom,  I discovered montage was a way to present a subject differently than a simple subject depicted in a single context. The association of one or more scenes suggested additional meanings. When taking pictures, often I experimented with double exposures. In the darkroom I had more control by layering images over each other rather than being surprised by an accidental double exposure.

This experience made me want to use layered imagery in my other art work as well. Many of my etchings began to be presented as montages.

To see more etchings, visit Ruth Zachary Montage, a former blog I maintained from 2008 to 2013.

The homecoming is wonderful, and brings back memories of your work in the 70's. What talent you have!
I hope to be able to reconnect with you.
We still live in Barry county. And, I still have and love the beautiful watercolor of the young woman gazing at her reflection in the window.
